Deportivo Alavés vs. Barcelona: La Liga 2016/2017 Preview

Deportivo Alavés vs. Barcelona: La Liga 2016/2017 Preview

Deportivo Alavés vs. Barcelona: La Liga 2016/2017 Preview

FC Barcelona (2nd in La Liga) boss Luis Enrique has labeled Deportivo Alavés one of the “revelations” of Spanish La Liga ahead of Saturday’s meeting at Estadio Mendizorroza in a dress rehearsal for May’s Copa del Rey 2017 final.

Deportivo Alavés (12th in La Liga) boss Mauricio Pellegrino led the Basque side to the Copa del Rey showpiece in midweek and masterminded their stunning 2-1 victory at the Nou Camp (Barcelona) earlier in the campaign.

Deportivo Alavés (promoted last summer) have had a respectable start to life in Spanish La Liga after a 10-year absence, currently sitting in 12th place, and Luis Enrique was full of praise for Barca’s opponents.

“They are playing very well, they have big numbers, a good position in the league, a newly-promoted team and a new coach,” Luis Enrique said at Friday’s pre-match press conference.

“It has a lot of value and they are a very dangerous team. It is a circumstance that does not happen often, but I do not think it is important that we are Copa finalists in tomorrow’s match.

“Deportivo Alavés are one of the revelations of the Spanish La Liga and that surprise at Camp Nou (Barcelona) now is not so much.

“We have 16 matches without tasting defeat. It will be complicated and difficult, especially in this state of form. There is no healthy rematch, we know it’s a team that got us in the first match and can get us again.”

Speculation over the venue for the Copa del Rey final has heightened after rumors suggested that the Bernabeu, home of Barca’s El Clasico rivals Real Madrid, will be the host of the end-of-season showpiece but Luis Enrique will not be drawn into discussing that possibility.

Luis Enrique refused to talk about their failed appeal over Luis Suarez’s red card in Tuesday’s semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

“It [playing at the Bernabeu] gives me no concern,” Luis Enrique added. “I’m very interested and I understand the position of each club.

“It isn’t an issue to me. I have no intention of getting into controversy. As a professional football man, I am not the best person to generate this kind of controversy, we are going to try to win, which is what we are here for.”

Javier Mascherano is a doubt for Saturday’s match after sustaining a thigh injury in midweek while Rafinha could return after a broken nose ruled him out of Tuesday’s match.

Deportivo Alavés’ Copa del Rey hero Edgar Mendez, who came off the bench to score the winner against Celta Vigo in midweek, suffered a leg injury and is a doubt for the clash.

FC Barcelona have failed to score in each of their last 3 visits to Mendizorroza in Spanish La Liga (D2 L1), their worst current run without scoring away from home against a single opponent.

FC Barcelona have scored in each of their last 14 league matches, averaging 3 goals per match. The last time they failed to score was also in the Basque Country, against Real Sociedad in April 2016.

If they win this match, Deportivo Alavés will be the first team to win 2 matches against FC Barcelona in a single season in all competitions since Bayern Munich in April/May 2013.

FC Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 14 Spanish La Liga matches (W9 D5), their best run since March 2016 (23).

Deportivo Alavés have picked up 72 yellow cards in Spanish La Liga this season, more than any other team.

Deportivo Alavés have conceded 13 goals in the last 15 minutes of matches in Spanish La Liga 2016/17, 4 more than they have conceded in the previous 75 minutes of matches this season.

After Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, Deportivo Alavés are the side who have trailed for the fewest minutes at home in Spanish La Liga this season (66).

Neymar has the best chances created per match average of any player in Spanish La Liga this season (3 per match).
